Transportation of Out-of-Gauge Loads and Heavy Cargoes

Out-of-gauge load delivery is one of the challenging tasks in logistics and beyond doubt is the fact that the freight delivery on these terms requires the individual approach and profound studies. One really needs to consider every detail, namely, to choose the optimal transportation means, arrange an itinerary of cargo movements plus based on the cargo parameters to coordinate with the organizations concerned and to evaluate the risks. An out-of-gauge load delivery is usually carried out by railway, by road or by sea. They apply railway open flat wagons, drop-frame semitrailers, low platforms, telescoping trailers. The specially designed stopping means are frequently used with this kind of job: they are brake shoes, adjustable stops, boxes, frames, etc. As out-of-gauges are most often the items of well drilling units, large wheel cranes, traction units, equipment for special purposes, metallurgical equipment, chemical industry equipment, power station turbines, transformers, construction beams and so forth, the key role in the successful out-of-gauge transportation plays the properly chosen transportation means.

As there are certain rules and requirements to the each kind of the transportation means, we need to consider separately the specific character of the delivery by railway road and that of the wheel vehicles.

Out-of-Gauge Loads Transportation by Railway

When one organizes an out-of-gauge load transportation internationally, the following must be observed:

  • coordination of the transportation according to the rules in force acting within a consignor’s country;
  • load placement on the rolling stock, checking its fixation in accordance to the instructions and rules valid both in a consignee’s country and a transit country;
  • deliver a loaded and fixed cargo to the railway authority.

A load is considered to be an out-of-gauge load provided that its contours (including its package and its fixation) come out of the accepted sizes for the placing on the rolling stock when the latter is located on the horizontal section of the railway. If a load comes out of the acceptable sizes when the rolling stock passes the curved sections, this load is also regarded as an out-of-gauge load.

The transportation of large size loads and heavy weight loads with flat platforms, replacers, load-transfer devices of various types and open wagons by Ukrainian railroads is regulated by Instruction No 1026 d.d. 23.11.2004 adopted by Ministry of Transportation and Communications of Ukraine. The requirements of this Instruction are obligatory for observation for all concerted to railway transport including consignors and consignees.

Out-of-Gauge Loads Transportation by Road

The typical truck is designed for the maximal loads of 13.6 m long, 2.45 m wide, 3.1 m high and with the weight of 21 ton. Any loads exceeding these parameters are called out-of-gauges. In order to deliver them to the destination point, the special lowboys and low bed trucks are used. Special purpose equipment and materials are fixed by means of shoes, pullout strings and ropes.

Out-of-gauge loads are subdivided into long loads and heavy loads:

  • Long loads are the items of solid structure longer than 20 m and coming out of trailer cars outlines as much as 2 m;
  • Нeavy loads are the items that exceed the maximal permitted masses or exceed the load they create on the axes of a wheel vehicle.

Transportation of heavy loads by wheel vehicle requires careful arrangements in terms of route selection as any viaducts and bridges which are not designed for the heavy item mass must be excluded from it. Transportation of long loads is not suitable for narrow streets since this kind of load increases vehicle turning radius when the vehicle is steering around the curve.

Moreover, out-of-gauge load transportation without special guiding is prohibited and this is regarded as the measure to avoid road accidents.

Arranging the international transportations and considering the load with its fixation, one should harmonize the norms and the regulations of the concerned consignee countries or transit countries. It is also necessary to collect all the mandatory documentation and to clarify the transportation with the local administration.
